Superluminescent Diode or SLD is a unique light source which has intermediate characteristics between laser and LED. It has a wide spectral width and also spatial directionality. Compared with laser, SLD light can be focused into a diffraction limited spot size, coupling efficiently with a single mode fiber, because of its non monochromatic feature. SLD is also much brighter than LED. With these characteristics, SLD is utilized for many applications such as optical fiber gyro, optical measurement system or wide range spectroscopy. Recently, Optical Coherence Tomography or OCT as biological body cross sectional imaging becomes more popular. The same technology is applied to semiconductor cross sectional imaging. Not only above, SLD can also be used as a high power SOA and a gain source of external cavity laser, like tunable laser or mode lock lasers.
